Need Broadband Speed Recommendation for Two Offices, one has Win Server, must upgrade to T1

Discussion in 'Server Networking' started by James D. Buskirk, Jul 16, 2004.

  1. I am Connecting 2 Offices via DSL with Point to Point VPN:

SiteA: has a Windows Server [for file sharing], and 25 users, printers,
    etc.
has DSL 3.0M/512k service currently with static IP

SiteB: [new, not in use yet] will just have 4 users [up to 25 potentially]
that need access to the Server at SiteA
had planned to get DSL 3.0M/512k service with different static IP
    All users need internet access

The main application they run is a Dos Collections program on a shared drive
on the Windows Server at SiteA. I will start testing the application at
different bandwidths tomorrow to see what speed will be acceptable. But I
know 512k Upload speed will not be. They also run some Gui Apps as well with
    data residing on the Server.

I simply want to know what the 'average' administrators out there are using
for broadband speed for multiple offices, with One Main server in one of the
offices. I just need a baseline to work with. I spoken to a few IS people I
know who seem to think that 2.0M Synchronous is enough. But I'm not
    convinced.

Personally, I think you are on the right track by testing your apps. The
speed you need is going to depend on what you are doing, how many users will
be doing it, and how critical speed is to what they are doing.

Then test. That's the only valid reason to decide on a speed --
because it works in your environment. We run 128K to some sites, but
the primary app used is designed for that speed. Yours may not be, so
our choice may not be even remotely near what yours should be.

  4. Wow, I just called Sprint and they can do a point to point T1 for $200 a
month. I will start testing the app this weekend.

Oh, and jeff sorry about responding personally. My mistake.
