    Hi

I have 1 windows 2000 domain controller and about 40 clients of win98,
win2000 and xp. My windows 2000 DC is dying and cant be upgraded so I am
going to buy a new server with windows 2003. I want to make this new server
my domain controller and pull the 2000 DC off the network when done. How do
I do this? What problems will I run into?

  2. You will actually be upgrading your Win 2k domain to Win 2k3.
    See:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555040/en-us

You can run adprep on your existing schema master, add the Win 2k3 server to
the domain as a member server, run dcpromo to make it a DC, transfer the
fsmo roles from the Win 2k DC to the Win 2k3 DC,
Move DNS, DHCP, WINS (if necessary), and the GC.
    See:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555549/en-us

this says the source DC should be Win 2k3 or higher but it should work with
    Win 2k also.

Install the Win2003 to the domain as a member machine.

    DCpromo it to DC.

Transfer (NTDSUtil roles) the 5 single master roles (aka FSMO) to the
    new DC.

Make the new DC a GC.

Arrange for DNS (and WINS) Server(s) if the departing DC ran your
    name server(s).
