The .net framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .net framework 3.5 family update is
designated as an Important update. Should it then be installed automatically
by Windows Update on Vista? I've noticed on a couple different Vista
machines that it does not get installed automatically, instead I had to go to
Windows Update and click Install Updates. Why doesn't it get installed
    automatically?

  3. According to MS:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/windowsupdate/FAQ.mspx

Change how Windows installs or notifies you about updates
    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/08603313-b94f-4597-ae20-b4267df16bb91033.mspx

MS states that Important updates will be installed automatically *if*
that setting is chosen in Vista.
Control Panel > Windows Updates > Click the Change settings link in the
left frame. Put a mark next to " Install updates automatically (recommended)

IF that setting has already been chosen and the .NET Framework did not
install automatically, then either something is wrong with the systems'
updating process or the updating info MS has published is incorrect.

Well, like I stated, even thought Windows Update was set to auto install all
important and recommended updates, it did not auto install the frmk update. I
just checked Windows Update on my Vista machine, and I see another important
update (Expression Blend) sitting there in the que not being auto installed.
By default Windows Vista is configured to install all important windows
updates at 3 am. If the machine is not on at the set time, will it still
install the update on next boot? I've noticed that it sometimes does install
updates at different times of the day (not just 3am). For example a lot of
time I get the yellow update icon on the Shut Down button that when clicked
will cause pending updates to be installed.

  6. If the machine is not on at the set time, will it still
If the system is set to download and install updates automagically, it
should install them when the system is started, they are or have been
downloaded, and are ready to install. The system should not need to wait
until the next shutdown when a scheduled installation time has been set
and the system was shut down prior to said scheduled installation time.

If that is the case, then the update for Expression Blend should install
    without you having to intervene.
Perhaps the .NET and Expression Blend updates are being overly "polite"?

  7. Perhaps these are updates that require you to accept a EULA before they are
installed? Updates with EULAs are never auto-installed.
