My network activity icon suddenly vanished from the notification area. So
did the Volume Control. R-Clicking on the Taskbar and going to
properties/notification area shows check boxes for both, but both are grayed
out. No changes have been made to the system. At reboot, the 2 items were
    just gone.

    Any ideas?

Before you do a system restore just check the status on the taskbar
properties there are options on the notification icons tab to not
    display these items :)
