Many sources cite that we will finally see a new Live Essentials beta on
Thursday. It has been a long time coming. I hope it impresses.

  2. Useful news, if true.

We may see how many bugs have been fixed.

But trying to run a beta on a non-test-based, consumer system is a risky
    maneuver at best.

There have been internal tests for months on different builds. I doubt MS
would release a beta that would cause wide-spread destruction. By the
success of the Win 7 beta, we will start seeing more and more betas from
    Microsoft.

Thanks for mentioning that - I'm having enough problems with
WLM already that I'm willing to help with testing that beta
version AFTER I can get past the problems I've had for over
two months with getting the backup program to produce any
successful backups at all. I'd like to report any problems I've
found with the current version that are still present in the beta
version, and therefore have more of a chance of getting them
fixed before the release of the new version.

running under Vista SP2 64-bit, but posting from a second
    computer still running Windows Mail

Is the current version of WLM available in a 64-bit version?

Also, most backup problems will skip open files. If your WLM is open during
the backup process, you won't get a good backup. I work in corporate IT and
this is true for our million dollar backup systems as well.

Afaik, unless it's been a well kept secret(since no one has mentioned it before), expectation of a 64bit unique version does not
    appear to in the works.
