I don't get any sound or the little blue alert box at the bottom of the
screen when a contact comes online. It doesn't always happen only sometimes,
and it's not particulary one contact specifically. It happens when the
person who comes online is blocked by myself. It's just very annoying when
you don't know that some one has come online.
This happens to me what ever computer I use (laptop or
pc) windows XP home or windows ME. Also it's not just this one hotmail
account that it happens to, it's every account that I have and use with msn
messenger. But there is never a problem with windows messenger (which is
also installed on my laptop and I use at the same time as MSN messenger).
I am sure that this must be a bug of msn (if not how do I fix it?)
I get the same problem with msn plus.
Also I have noticed that if one of my contacts have sent me email, I can see
that when I open my hotmail iinbox if they are online with windows
messenger, even if they have blocked me (I tested this myself with using msn
messenger and windows messenger with 2 different accounts). But in msn
messenger I don't see this when in my in my hotmail inbox. Is this normal?
    Many thanks for any help.

  2. Greetings Blondie,

The behavior you're mentioning is by design. In MSN Messenger, contacts that are blocked do
not show a "notification" (otherwise known as alert or toast). In Windows Messenger, it
    always shows the "notifications" regardless.

However, mail to Hotmail should not be affected and the associated "notification" should
still come up (unless you've blocked their address within Hotmail itself).

    Thanks for your reply Jonathon.
I do get new mail notification when it arrives but what I actually mean is
that if my contacts are currently online, and you are can already see old
email from them in your inbox in hotmail, with MSN messenger you don't get
the little green man by the side of the email. but with windows messenger
you do. Is that just one of the differences between msn and windows
messenger, or is that a fault?

  5. Hi Blondie,

Actually the latest revision of the Hotmail website takes this into account and should
display the status of contacts within MSN Messenger. However, if Windows Messenger is loaded
or signed in, then it won't.
