No sound in 2003 headless configuration

I'm running a machine with 2003 enterprise in a headless configuration and
the applications that run on it can't access the direct sound devices - it's
like they never get initiated. I had seen otherplaces that a local login had
to happen first before headless XP boxes would work, so I've done this (local
user logins, then out again), but still, no direct sound devices.

I test to see if the devices work by rdesktoping in and trying sound
recorded and vlc. (I have also tested vlc remotely through apache, to try
and make sure that it's not the remote desktop login that mashes things up).

Any suggestions? How can I force windows to init these devices? Thanks in
    advance...
