Ok so ive made the change to WML, im used to thunderbird, but ive got vista
now so trying live mail. Seems to work aside from one issue.

If im running wlm without minizing it to the tray icon i get new email
notifications, if i select "hide window when indox is minized" i no longer
get any notification that ive got a new email. Is this a bug or by design?
thunderbird seems to show new mail icons when minized, i had hoped live would
    do the same?

    Am i doing something wrong?

How often are you checking for new messages?
What type of account are you using?

What I have found is when the icon shows new email and you open WLM and read
one new email, the icon will change form the new email icon to the WLM icon
even if you received several new emails.

Im set up to use Gmail via Imap ( that all works ok ).

Im checking for new emails every 1 min.

    The problem is

I send a new email to my gmail account ( from a different account ).

The mail arrives ok, and if my live mail isnt minimized to the tray i get a
    new email notification email.

If my live mail is minimised to the tray using "hide window when indox is
minized" Then no new email notifiations will appear.

One minute is a very short time.
Try changing to 5 or 10 minutes to see what happens.

I'll try the longer time frame, but if thats the solution good bye windows
mail, thats unacceptable really and i dont believe its the cause of the
problem, its to do with minimizing the window to the tray. as it works fine
    when its not minimized..
