    Robert Ozone Guest

I need to start planning an upgrade of a NT domain that consists of

Here is what I do know from a former co-worker, 5 servers not running AD
    1 - NT4 TS w/Citrix (member)
    2 - NT4 APP server (PDU)
3 - W2K Exchange and IIS Web Server (member)
    4 - W2K File server (member)
    5 - W2K SQL server (member)

I would like to replace the # 3 server keep the same server name and upgrade
    the domain to use AD.
Need help with outline of the steps that would need to be done in order to
succesfully upgrade the domain and and keep the same server name for the
    server #3.

  2. To upgrade a NT 4.0 domain to AD you MUST upgrade the PDC first. The NT 4.0
PDC is the ONLY server on a NT 4.0 domain that holds a writeable copy of the
SAM. By upgrading the existing PDC to AD you are carrying the NT 4.0 SAM
into AD. Upgrading *any* *other* DC/member server to AD before the PDC will
create a NEW SAM. New SAM = New domain.

Suggest you upgrade your existing PDC first.
    Or

Use another "box", install NT 4.0 on it as a BDC while connected to your
existing network, promote to PDC, upgrade to AD. Install DNS, make the zone
    AD integrated
Run dcpromo on server #3 to make it a DC, transfer all FSMO roles to the new
server, make it a global catalog and install DNS. When you made your DNS AD
integrated and installed DNS on the new DC, your DNS info will get
    replicated to this server.

You MUST have DNS set up correctly for AD to work.

for NT4 to 2003 look at the information on:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/upgrading/nt4/tooldocs/default.ms
    px

as well as the 2003 deployment kit which may have the information you are
    looking for
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/reskit/deploykit.mspx

both these links contain tools and whitepapers to help you with your
    migration.
