Single NT4 domain with Exchange 5.5. Looking to upgrade to Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003 on new hardware.

    Current environment -
    100 users
    1 NT4 PDC with Exchange 5.5
    1 NT4 BDC as file/print, WINS, DHCP

Customer would like to have pristine 2003 environment and move all users and computers from NT domain (using ADMT). Unfortunately their Netbios domain name will not change. I don't believe we can then create connection agreements. Is there any way around this, ie new temporary netbios name then domain rename to original after 2003 migration? By the time you also migrate exchange (using ADC), will there be more downtime for users? Will there be excessive client side re-configuration and too many risks with this method?

I would prefer to install NT4 server (as BDC) to new hardware, then promote to PDC and perform in-place upgrade to W2003. After AD is stable, then install exchange 2003 into domain and migrate 5.5 data (how do you migrate public folders if in windows 2003 interim mode?) Would this in-place method reduce downtime and risks?

    Ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jed

    Hello Jed,

The simplest upgrade would be to do an in-place upgrade. It is the only way
    to keep the original
NetBIOS name. It is also the least time-consuming method, zero downtime as
    well
as no great AD skills required.

    Cheers,

and Exchange 2003 on new hardware.
