    I have an existing NT4 domain with 4 servers-- a PDC, a BDC, and 2 members
    Servers. Exchange Server 5.5, and IIS/Apps

    NT4 servers:
    PDC = file/print server & DNS1
    BDC = DNS2/ DHCP/Wins
    Mail = Exchange 5.5
    Apps = IIS/ other Apps

    Win 2000 Server: (member server) for OWA only

    I would like to upgrade my NT4 domain; by doing the following;

    1. Perform a full backup for the existing Windows NT PDC.
    2. Install Windows NT 4.0 BDC on the temp server and apply the latest
    Service Pack.
    3. In Server Manager, promote the BDC to PDC.
    4. In-place upgrades the temp server to Windows Server 2003 and installs AD.
    6. Install Windows Server 2003 on the new server.
    7. Promote to DC1. and DC2
    8. Transfer all the FSMO roles to the new DC1.

    My questions are this;
    - What happen to my DNS when I promote the new BDC to PDC??
    - Should I backup my DNS setting on the new BDC before I promote it and
    force sync?
    - I would like to keep my domain name the same … can I keep it the same
    under win 2003?
    - My old PDC (now is a BDC) is a file server with user home dir. On it when
    I promote the new BDC to PDC can my user still access their home dir. While
    I’m upgrading the new PDC to win 2003??

    At the end of the upgrade I should be ending up with the following;
    DC1 Main domain controller (GC/DC/ DNS1)
    DC2 2ed domain Controller (DC2/ DNS2/DHCP/Wins)
    File/ print server user’s home dir. & print server.
    Mail… NT4/exchange 5.5 will be upgraded later..to win 2003/ exchange 2003

    Any idea if this will work and if so and down side to this approach… any one
    did this so far???

    Thanks in advance for all the advice

  2. Hi Nick,

    Thanks for your posting here.

    - What happen to my DNS when I promote the new BDC to PDC??

    It will not affect the NT DNS when you promote BDC to PDC.

    - Should I backup my DNS setting on the new BDC before I promote it and
    force sync?

    No need. You will install DNS service on the Windows 2003 DC.

    - I would like to keep my domain name the same ?€? can I keep it the same
    under win 2003?

    Yes. When you upgrade to Windows 2003 domain, you can keep the original
    Domain NETBIOS name and you can choose a domain DNS name.

    - My old PDC (now is a BDC) is a file server with user home dir. On it when
    I promote the new BDC to PDC can my user still access their home dir. While
    I'm upgrading the new PDC to win 2003??

    Yes. The users still can access their profile even you upgrade to Windows
    2003 domain.

    Have a nice day!
