    I downloaded this update.
NVIDIA display software update released on May 02 2003.

Subsequently the the sound "stutters" on entering my
windows XP account on our family computer.

The stutter occurs as InCD software (CD -RW software)
    loads

Restoring to the previous restore point returns the sound
to normal - any ideas what is wrong?

    Thanks Cinta

Joe has good advice about getting the drivers from Nvidia
instead of the Windows Update site. However, a friend ran
into the sound stuttering issue with the newer versions of
the drivers. He fixed it by backing up to the 30.82 or
40.72 releases of the Detonator drivers.
directly from nVidia. That should solve the problem you
    are having.

Have your friend update the drivers for his motherboard chipset.

One very important thing to do when updating Nvidia drivers from Windows
Update or on Nvidia's web site. They Nvidia tell you to disable your
Antivirus software before installing the new drivers. I would recommend to
disable all startup items in msconfig and all non Microsoft services except
the Nvidia startup items which there are too and the only service there is
Nvidia Driver Helper Service. Make sure you check Hide Microsoft Services.
You can do this by going to Start/Run and type msconfig and go to the
Startup tab and the services tab. After you restart the computer you can
install the video drivers and after that you can go back to msconfig and
check everything you disabled. I have never had any problems installing
Nvidia Drivers from Windows Update this way.
