ORDER: Does the order matter?

I have used the "windows update" web site and the "office update" web site
to scan my computer and come up with a list of 40 or so updates I need. I
am using this list and downloading these updates from the "windows update
    catalog" web site.

The files I am downloading seem to fall in to three groups:
    1) file names with Qnnnnn in them (hotfixs?)
    2) file names with KBnnnnn in them (upgrades?)
    3) files that have no discernable patter such as setup.exe,
    MDAC_SecurityPatch.exe, msjavwu.exe, etc.

My question is how am I supposed to figure out what the order that I need to
install these updates... I read somewhere that the key is the date... but
that same write up said that the "windows update" "for my computer" list
(not the catalog list) listed them in date order and that this was the order
they needed to be applied.... When I looked at the list there it did not
seem to be sorted by date or any other pattern I could discern. Even if
that info is correct is does not address how the groups (crit/SP's,
recommended, and office) are supposed to be integrated together in a single
list.... I was expecting the deployment guide to address this topic but it
seems only seem to address hotfixes (Q) and even then does not talk about
    the order.

    Please help.

I would recommend installing Service Packs first, Rollup updates, then any
    remaining critical updates.
The service pack and rollup updates include numerous update installing those
first would eliminate a number of updates from the list.

I already had Service Pack 1 installed on XP home plus all
the updates as they came out. Update roll up 1 (KB8269939)
continually shows up on the critical updates I need even
though when I install it, the install says it is completed

    How do youi fix that?
