OUs in User Templates

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by J. M. De Moor, Sep 28, 2007.

  1. Two SBS 2003 questions:

    1. What determines which Organizational Units appear in the Organization
units pick list on the Templates and Organizational Units page of the
Add Template Wizard? I added 2 OUs, one under SBSUsers and the other as
a peer to SBSUsers under Users. The latter appears in the list, but the
    former does not.

    2. When using the Change User Permissions wizard to reapply a modified
template, what happens to mailbox related stuff? The finish panel says:

The user accounts will be modified to:
    Contain an Exchange mailbox
    Contain a home folder

....but suppose the user already has a mailbox and home folder? Are
    these modified in any way?

    Thanks,
    Joe

  2. Hi Joe,

Thank for posting in our newsgroup.

For your first questions, I am not sure what Organizational Units page you
refer to here. Is that the Security Group Page?

    I made the following test:

    1. Click Add a and click Next.
    2. Input Template name and Description, click Next.
    3. A Security Groups page appears, add Security Groups and click Next.
    4. Select Distribution Group and click Next.
    5. Select SharePoint Role and click Next.
    6. Input the Address Information and click Next.
    7. Select Disk Quotas and click Next.
    8. Finish the wizard.

There is no information about Organizational Units page in the wizard.

I also made a test to create Security Groups under My Business and under
SBSUsers, they can all appear in the Security Groups page in add Template
    wizard.

If you create a OU, this will not appear in the Security Groups page, that
is by design. We can only select Security Groups here.

Please give me the screen shot of what you see and send to
with subject: OUs in User Templates for further
    research.

For your second question, if you run Change User Permissions wizard, it
changes the permission to be default settings as the Template you selected,
it will not change mailbox related setting.

If the user is created in ADUC and the mailbox is not created, this wizard
will add mailbox and configure home folder for the user.

    Hope this helps.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Robert Li(MSFT)

  3. Hi Joe,

    Thanks for your reply.

Based on my research, the Templates and Organizational Units page allows
the user to specify the OU for users created with this template. This page
is only displayed OUs if they are underneath the
Users.MyBusiness.domain.com OU. If OUs are not under
Users.MyBusiness.domain.com OU, they will not appear in Templates and
Organizational Units page. Since the Child OU is not under Users (it is
under SBSUsers), it will not appear. If only the SBS
Users.Users.MyBusiness.domain.com exists there, this page is skipped by
    default.

Also, the Export Templates Wizard and Import Template Wizard allow an
administrator the ability to export or import templates to and from SBS
2003. The exported templates exist as XML documents. We can't read the
configuration information directly, the following data are exported or
    imported by the wizard:

    Name
    Pre-Windows 2000 logon-name
    Display name
    Description
Ability to log on using dial-up networking or VPN
Ability to log on using Terminal Services
Program to be executed when TS connection is opened
Working directory for program to be executed when TS connection is opened
    Group membership
    OU template belongs to
    Quota settings
    SharePoint role

    Hope this helps.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

    <<<Two SBS 2003 questions:
    <<<
<<<1. What determines which Organizational Units appear in the Organization
<<<units pick list on the Templates and Organizational Units page of the
<<<Add Template Wizard? I added 2 OUs, one under SBSUsers and the other as
<<<a peer to SBSUsers under Users. The latter appears in the list, but the
    <<<former does not.
    <<<
<<<2. When using the Change User Permissions wizard to reapply a modified
<<<template, what happens to mailbox related stuff? The finish panel says:
    <<<
<<<The user accounts will be modified to:
    <<< Contain an Exchange mailbox
    <<< Contain a home folder
    <<<
<<<...but suppose the user already has a mailbox and home folder? Are
    <<<these modified in any way?
    <<<
    <<<Thanks,
    <<<Joe
    <<<
