Overloaded Server Question

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by Randy Whitehead, Nov 10, 2005.

  1. I currently have SBS2K3 running on a dual xeon 3.0 with 2GB RAM.

I am using the server for the following:

    DNS & DHCP
    SQL Server
Terminal Server (currently have 2 users, need to upgrade to 10)

I have a small office of about 15 client PCs and it seems like it is
starting to slow down. I have thought about adding a seperate Terminal
Server or SQL Server, but I am not sure if I just need to add more power to
    this server.

    I would appreciate any thoughts.

    How big are your stores?
What kind of throughput i.e. transactions/hour are you doing?
....err? Does this mean you have applications for these users installed on
    your SBS?

BTW SBS2003 doesn't allow application mode TS, so you're limited to 2 TS
sessions. Looks like you're going to need a separate TS.

  3. mad.exe and store.exe are each over 300kb in memory
    Not sure how to tell?
Yes my main application is Microsoft Solomon, so all my users are logged in
    most of the day.

Sorry, I actually meant the size of the files in the MDBDATA directory - the
    public and private Exchange stores.
OK, how much memory is sqlservr.exe using? I've got a box with 2GB RAM and
sqlservr.exe using currently using around 300MB of that.
Via terminal services? Or do they have a client on their own PC?

A new TS sounds like a good idea to me...

  5. It sounds like your setup is pretty close to mine. SBS2003 SP1 (exchange
    SP2), 1x2.8 Xeon, 1Gb RAM, 3x72Gb SCSI RAID5
It also runs Solomon, SQL 2000, Exchange,DNS,WINS,DHCP, and is the main file
share for a company of 60+ people.

Main Office has 20 People (all use Outlook, files, 10-12 use Solomon), we
have a Windows 2000 Terminal Server. The main SBS is also used foe all
remote sales people to use Outlook using RCP over HTTP. General user load at
any time is around 38-40 people. It still responds well and I have not seen
or heard of any performance issues. We have all of the systems in the main
    office on a Gigabit network.

p.s. the exchange store is at 18Gb at the moment (private) and around 1.5Gb

  6. Public is 825MB
    Private is 4kb
    Using 70-80MB
    Via TermServ RDP

  7. What is the memory usage like on your box? I have 2GB RAM and usage is
always showing around 2.5GB, most of which is exchange. 600MB.

  8. What kind of hardware are you using for the Terminal Server? It looks like
    I'll be doing some shopping.
