We have additional suggestions posted in the Windows Update Troubleshooter:
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

    Under:
Scan for updates freezes or stops at 0%

Web accelerator/enhancement programs are known to intercept the Windows
Update process. Please temporarily disable before accessing Windows Update.
