The problem is that filesvr01 is not registering a host record in the
    fabrikam.com zone.

    Router01 and filesvr01 are running W2K3

The fabrikam.com zone is configured to allow secure and non-secure dynamic
    updates.

    Thanks Anastas

I set router01's Primary DNS suffix to fabrikam.com, which of course
required a restart, then filesvr01 appeared in fabrikam.com zone.

So was it setting the Primary DNS suffix, or the restart, that caused
    filesvr01 to register?

    Any ideas anyone,

    Best regards Anastas

  3. Absolutely.

In summary, on a non-DC, the DHCP Client service, which performs Dynamic
Registration, reads the hostname and IP address, then reads the Primary DNS
Suffix, which then sends this info using the DNS server configured in IP
properties requesting registration in the zone specified as the Primary DNS
Suffix, as well as reverse IP info, if a reverse zone exists. There's more
to it than just that, but that is the gist of it.

If it's a DC, the above is performed in addition the netlogon service
registers the LdapIpAddress, GcIpAddress and other SRV data into the zone
specified as the Primary DNS Suffix.

To continue, if the zone name on a domain controller does not match the AD
zone name, it is a "dijointed namespace" issue. Otherwise, if no Primary DNS
Suffix is configured on a machine, there's no zone to send the registration
    info to.

If "router01" is a domain controller, expect other issues happening because
multihomed DCs are problematic if not configured correctly (includes
registry changes, etc). If a non-DC, no worries.

    Hi Ace,

Thank you for the excellent info.

Router01 is not a DC, and is currently working well in it's planned role as
a router - hence the two NICs.

    Thanks very much, Anastas
