After installing SP4, my pc would hang on restart and
shutdown (no power off). I found a fix for the same
problem in Windows NT4 on Dell's support site
    < http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?
DN=1037472>. Decided to give it a try, followed all of the
other instructions for copying the files
(had to substitute the windows 2000 file:
    C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386\hal.dll for the NT file:
    x:\i386\hal.dll.softex hal.dll as windows 2000 doesn't use
softex) and edited the registry and it worked. I don't
know why the service pack install didn't automatically
update the hardware abstraction layer when it installed???
