I still cannot install my 73 downloaded windows update files. I don't mean
to be redundant but I even tried the following process, with no success.
    Please help.

    1) Reboot and logon as a user with Administrative Privs...
    2) Immediately run the following batch script (You will have to create it by
    cutting/pasting as directed.)

    - Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose
    Yes when you are prompted.
    - Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad

    The Process may take sometime.

    3) Download/Install Windows Update v3.
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

(You may need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right
after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.)

    4) Download/Install the 927891 patch
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

    5) Reboot.

Well, since you have re-registered just about everything, emtied out all the
caches and recreated the software distribution folders as well as installed
the latest version of the Windows Update client and installed the
SVCHOST.EXE related patch... Now we have to actually troubleshoot.

(Assuming you tried using the batch file posted in Safe Mode and then trying
    again?)

However - in order to trobleshoot - more information is needed. You say you
"cannot install my 73 downloaded windows update files" --> How were they
    downloaded?

Have you tried installing any ONE of them individually - manually? By that
I mean actually downloading the executable from the corresponding KB article
web page and installing it by double-clicking on the EXE to run it?

    Have you tried using http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/?

In other words - give us as much detail as you can. Include any EventLog
messages you get when the updates are attempting to install - etc.

  3. Please say more precisely what you mean by "cannot install". Give precise
verbatim copies of any error messages or error numbers received.

If these failed updates appear in your Windows Update history, click on the
red cross to get a popup with error number.

Thanks for your reply. To clarify, I am running windows update through
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. When trying to update, I get a summary
stating that 0 of the 73 installations were successful. An example of the
    first 3 security updates are:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339)
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)
After your post, I tried to run the batch file while in safe mode and then
tried the update again. Again, this was unsuccessful.

Now, I tried to update the first three security updates individually by
downloading the executable from the corresponding KB article web page and
installing it by double-clicking on the EXE to run it (as u suggested), and I
was able to do so. Still, I would like to know how i can update using
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. This would be MUCH more convenient and
quicker for me. I would still like to resolve the issue preventing me from
using this service. Thank you always for your help!

Just to add, I read another post stating that they could not install 73
updates using Windows Update after an XP repair. I, also, recently did an XP
repair after installing a new motherboard and processor (using the same hard
drive and copy of Windows). I tried the following solution that was
suggested, and too no avail. Hope this clarifies my situation further.

    1. (not for Vista) If your update history shows that you do not yet have
update KB927891 installed, then download and install update KB927891 ver3
(there are different versions for XP and 2000):
    <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891>
    and then restart Windows.

    2. For 32-bit systems, download and save to hard disk, and then install:
    <http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>

If this produces an error message about "Update agent already
installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter
/wuforce as in (at a comand prompt window):

    WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce
