Problem with Album Artist & Contributing Artists

I have a lot of compilation albums which I play using MWP 11.

When viewing a whole album, it shows (next to the album artwork) the
    "album", "album artist" and "genre".

The problem is, the "album artist" tends to display the first "contributing
artist". When I edit the "album artist" to read 'various artists' , WMP
changes the contributing artist for each track to 'various artists'.

Any ideas what the problem is & how I can solve it ?

That's very strange behavior. Album Artist and Contributing Artist do not
map to the same fields in the database or in the ID3 tags. The only thing I
can think of here is to try following the instructions at
    http://www.zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary to rebuild your library
    database.

For tracks that don't have Album Artist set, editing the Display Artist
(elevated Contributing Artist, exactly what you're doing) will set both
because the player can't judge strongly which way would be correct, and
editing both is significantly more common/accurate.

So, for your case, you need to edit that field (Album Artist) using the
Advanced Tag Editor. Then this scenario works perfectly. So: you would
select all the tracks in question, right-click on them, select Advanced Tag
Editor, go to the second tab in that dialog, unlock the Album Artist field,
    edit that, voila. Works perfectly.

I ran into this exact same thing at first and had the exact same confusion.
    =)
