Like others in this newsgroup, I keep getting the Windows
Update message that my Windows98SE nees the Q329414
Critical Update (MDAC2.1) even though my Windows Update
    installation history shows several successful
installations and even though I've saved it to my hard
drive and have "successfully" installed it a couple of
    times off-line.

I've also downloaded and installed MDAC2.8 and searching
    for files I find a MDAC_CORE.INI and MDAC_CORE.DAT.

For over a month, I couldn't get Windows Update no matter
what I tried. Then it seemed to find me 09-26-2003 but I
don't know how. But HijackThis recorded a new R1 -
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Internet
    Settings, ProxyServer=localhost1 and a new R2 -
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Internet
    Settings, Proxy Override=*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com[][]
    *.Windowsupdate.com[][]W... (where [] represents a little
square box and ... represents the end of the Hijack This
window so I don't know the whole string).

Find file vesion info for proof of install at the knowledge
base article. WU detection script may not yet contain info
for checking for MDAC 2.8 so this may be why you are nagged
to install the MDAC update. Appearently users who did the
same thing as you but with the MDAC 2.7 package also got
nagged for while - until MS rewrote the detection script.
They do change it just for such an issue as yours and they
will apply the new script without any warning so it may be
    fixed any day.

I have niether value in my registry but am not current with
828750 and a few others too, so this MAY be normal settings
for an up to date machine.

Registry string you need to avoid MDAC 2.1 nag is this
