If using MPEG2 decoders such as WinDVD or Sonic, it seems that DVD video or
MPEG2 TV playback is inferior and softer compared to playback of the same
file inside the native application for the directshow filter. I am running
at 1280x720 res, and I am wondering whether the relevant DVD application
takes an anamorphic DVD video stream, horizontally stretches it (whilst
leaving the vertical res at 480 NTSC or 576 PAL) and then scales it to the
monitor res - i.e. the proceedure it should follow - whilst Media Center
2004 vertically reduces the res whilst maintaining the horizontal res of
720, and then scales it to the monitor res.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case? It would seem to account for the
    loss of detail.
