    Hello,

Could I join a Windows 2003 AD controller to a Windows 2000 domain with
Native 2000 Forest functional level without updating the root Windows 2000 AD
controller (Schema master) to 2003 level? Would the update process then
replicate the schema update to all the other 2000 AD controllers bringing
    them up to 2003 level?

The AD environment is Native 2000 Forest functional level. It consists of
mixture of 2000 and 2003 DCs. Eventually I would like to raise the AD
environment to Windows 2003 Server Forest functional Level.

Could you please tell me the best practice of doing this?

    Many Thanks

  2. Hello,
No - if you want to introduce a new WS2k3 DC in your forest you have to update
    the schema first.
If you already did update your schema then forget about the above answer. If
not I don't understand what you mean with that statement.
Make sure that all DCs are updated, make a backup of your DCs (however I never
ever had issues with raising the domain/forest level), then use any interface
you like to do this (ADUC, AD Domains and Trusts, scripting or ntdsutil).

    Replying my own post:

Sorry guys for the confusion. It is already a mixed environment - Forest
functional level from Native 2000 with Win2000 and Win2003 DCs.

The Win2003 DCs were not added by me so I was not sure if the schema needs
    to be updated in advanced.

Main question is trying to understand if updating schema means you could
raise ur forest functional level to Server 2003 even without having all DCs
    being Win2003 in the forest.

Can I clarify again the below:
-schema update only helps you to introduce Win2003 Dcs into mixed environment.
-you need all Dcs to be Win2003 in the forest before you can raise it to
    Win2003 forest functional level.

    Thanks Jorge, Greg and Ulf...
