I ran eseutil to do an offline defrag. Afterwards, the
database size is unchanged. Do I have to wait for
exchange to run its own housekeeping tonight for the
database size to shrink? If not what went wrong? If I add
up the mailbox sizes as shown in ESM, there is at least
4G of space I should gain.

  2. If the offline defrag did not shrink the database file down, there must not
have been any free space within it to return to the hard drive.

When you view the space that a mailbox uses in Exchange System Manager, the
amount only includes the space that is used by the Priv.edb file. The
amount does not include the space that the Priv.stm file uses.

I understand that the .stm file is also a factor, however
my .stm file is only a few 100k. The differnce between
all my mailboxes, if you add them up in ESM and compare
that to the priv1.edb is over 3G. Can you explain the
    discrepancy?
