This question pertains to versions 6 and 7 of IE.

If I were to have un-checked the "Always ask before opening this type of
file" when I click on a downloadable file (be it an exe or a picture), how do
    I re-check this option?

  2. Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to the file type in question and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Check the box for "Confirm open after download".

That is not the option I was looking for.

This option relates to the prompt before the file is saved... asking whether
to open it or save it.

It was already checked... I tried unchecking it, however that did not do it.

That only asks if I am sure I want to open it, once the file has already
    been downloaded.

Appologies, unchecking then applying, then rechecking and applying seems to
    have done the trick.

    Thank you.
