Recurring Unresolved Item

I have a Toshiba e570 running on PocketPC 2002 and have
recently come across a problem while synchronising it
with my computer. I'm using ActiveSync version 3.5 for
synchronsation. All items synchronise without any
difficulty apart from 1 item in my Inbox. I click the
icon to "Resolve Item" and instead of being given the
option to decide which version of the item is correct, it
just returns to the original screen as if nothing had
    taken place.
As far as I can see as well, all items in my PocketPC and
computer PC are the same so there doesn't seem to be an
    Unresolved Item.
I've tried just about everything apart from hard reset
(i.e. wipe out) my PocketPC or uninstall and reinstall
the ActiveSync software to no avail.

Has anyone else seen this kind of problem crop up and if
so, could you suggest how I go about clearing this small
    (but irritating) problem?

    Many Thanks........

    Hi Canu,

It appears that some attachment in one of your e-mails is causing the
unresolved item message. This problem creeps up when ActiveSync is unable
to convert the attachment e.g password protected Word/Excel files.

Try running the Scanpst utility to check for any corruption in the PST file.
Search for scanpst.exe on your computer. Usually the location of the file
    are as follows:

    * Windows XP, NT and 2000:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT\scanpst.exe

    * Windows 95, 98, and Me:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\95\scanpst.exe

Note: C: might need to be replaced with appropriate drive letter. If that
doesn't help, then you could try to isolate the e-mail with the attachment
by synchronizing mails with lesser time frame ---

    1. Open ActiveSync on your computer.
    2. Click Tools -> Options -> Select Inbox -> Click Settings and specify the
    time frame.
    3. Click Ok to save and attempt to synchronize.

    Hi Raj,

    Thanks for the advice.

I ran the scanpst.exe program on my Outlook.pst file but
alas, I am still unable to clear the Unresolved Item.

I also tried isolating the offending e-mail changing the
ActiveSync Inbox synchronisation time frame settings
(changed to 1 day) but to no avail.

Do you have any more suggestions?

    Hi Canu,

Create a new folder in Outlook, select all the mails in your Inbox folder
and move them to the temp folder. Now connect and synchronize your PPC.
Once synchronization is complete try moving mails (say 2 or 3 at a time) and
synchronize after every set. The moment you encounter the unresolved error,
you can narrow down the errant mail and delete it.

After identifying, you could move all the mails back to the original folder
    and delete the temp folder.

I just posted what works for me on a mail above but just incase you don't
spot it here it is again.

Now I know this won't sound like a very high tech solution and I have no
idea why or how it works, but I have always been able to cure this by
dragging an email from my Outlook inbox to one of the folders on the left
hand pane, then giving it a second or two, I then use the "undo" option in
"edit" on the top taskbar (or the blue circular back arrow icon) to put the
mail back on the inbox where it started.

This always makes my active sync update the folder Hierarchy which for some
reason also fixes all my unresolved messages as well.

As I say I don't know why this works but it does for me so it may be worth
you trying it next time it happens?

    Hi Again Raj,

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried your clever workaround of creating the temporary
folder to identify the offending message but
unfortunately, I managed to come across the Recurring
Unresolved Item again, even when the Inbox was emptied of
    all messages.

Any and all further help would be appreciated....!

    Hi David,

Thanks for taking the time out to suggest this answer.
I tried your solution but unfortunately, the same problem
    still occurs.

    Hi Canu,

Try running Detect & Repair utility under the Help menu in Outlook, then try
synchronizing after performing a soft reset. If that doesn't work --

    1. Open ActiveSync on your Desktop.
    2. Go to Tools -> Options and uncheck Inbox as an item to be synchronized.
    3. Click Ok and synchronize.

Repeat the above steps but select Inbox this time. If that doesn't work,
then recreate the partnership. To delete a partnership ---

    1. Disconnect the PPC from the computer.
    2. In Activesync -> File -> Delete Partnership.
    3. Connect the device and follow the onscreen instructions to setup a new

Hope this helps solve your problem !!

    Hi Raj,

I tried your suggestions below without any success.
Ironically, what happened after I tried the deletion and
recreation of the partnership was that all times
sychronised except for the files. I got another error
message stating that the synchronisation couldn't take
place because a file couldn't be synchronised with my
mobile device. Not exactly the most helpful error message
in the World! I even removed all the files in the folder
on the PC and I still received this message.
Anyway, as a last resort, I performed a hard reset on the
Pocket PC which wiped it completely then synchronised it
again with my PC and thankfully, this worked!

Thanks for taking the time out to give suggestions!

Here's a fix that worked for me -

"Heres a %100 cure I have used for several years with my 2210
When synced go to Active sync options and select Sync to server.
    Click configure
    Select(check) items to sync)
    Click OK
Window will open giving option to delete all on PPC and replace with
    server. Check delete all.
    Click OK
It will then tell you it cannot be done because there is no server.
    Click OK
That will return you to the Sync window
    Uncheck (Sync to server)
Be sure to check and see that all the items you want to sync are checked
Then resync. It will take several minutes to replace all the deleted info.

Sounds complicated at first but takes but a minute to do."

Another way I've done it is:
    "1. Download "pocket dbExplorer" (
    2. Use the trail version and skip registration
    3. Go to entry "MailActiveSync"
    4. hit "Edit - Empty"
    5. sync you pda again
    6. unresolved items are gone."

But if you want to use the software for more than 30 days, you need to pay
    for it...
