The "Current Control Set" provides the information for the "Last Known
Configuration" Safe Mode option and values are specific for the computer to
which it refers and is not likely to be a "cure".

  5. Actually, if you look at HKLM\SYETEM\Select, you'll see that Current,
Default, Failed and LastKnownGood can all point to different Control
Sets. In fact, LastKnownGood should never point to the same as
Current - the control set pointed to by Current gets copied to another
control set on successful Windows startup, and LastKnownGood is set to
point to that copy so that changes made to current can be rolled back
at the next boot by choosing LastKnownGood.

In addition, if you look at the values in the ControlSetxxx keys
you'll see many entries that it is quite reasonable to expect can be
exported from one computer to another to cure problems, especially
those in the Control and Services branches. For instance, the
....\Control\TimeZoneInformation key and values from one computer could
be used to fix another computer with broken time zone / daylight
saving settings, as long as the two were in the same time zone. Many
of the Services settings would behave similarly. Hardware Profiles
and Enum would not under most circumstances, however, as they are very
    system specific.

Arthur: All my life I've had this strange feeling that there's
something big and sinister going on in the world.
Slartibartfast: No, that's perfectly normal paranoia. Everyone in the
    universe gets that.
