Reinstalled WSUS 3.0 SP1 Now Issues

I reinstalled WSUS 3.0 SP1 because a client I added was ending up in the
Unassigned Computers Group. Well I did a bonehead move and inadvertantly
deleted the dbase when I did the uninstall. So I tried to recreate two of my
    three original update group manually:

    Server Computers
    Client Computers

Initially I thought it had worked but the log below clearly reflects that I
failed. Now I know SBS 2003 is integrated with WSUS via GP but I've no idea
how to fix this short of reinstalling WSUS 2.0 from the R2 disk. Before I do
this I was wondering if anyone knew another solution, thanks.

  2. Hello Gary,

    Thank you for your post.
My name is Gary Wang, and it is my pleasure to work with you on this issue!
Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
    understand it, the issue is:

Your WSUS failed to work after reinstall with the following error:

    Begin SyncGroups
The Server Computers group was not found: Update Services Server
    Computers.
The Client Computers group was not found: Update Services Client
    Computers.

If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.

    Suggestion :
    ==============
Based on my experience, if the database was deleted, you have to reinstall
the whole WSUS. You can reinstall WSUS 2.0 on SBS server by reinstall SBS
R2 component from Add or Remove Programs.

I suggest that we follow the steps below to reinstall the WSUS on SBS 2003
    R2:

To uninstall the WSUS on SBS 2003 R2:

    1. In Add/remove programs, select Remove to remove Windows Small business
    server R2.
    2. Delete all files under the folder: C:\WSUS
    3. Delete all files the folder: C:\Program Files\Update Services
    4. Delete the WSUS related Virtual directories under the Default web site
    in IIS admin.

    - UpdateServices virtual directory
    - ClientWebService virtual directory
    - SelfUpdate virtual directory

    5. Confirm that IIS and other buildCin websites were still functioning.
    6. Check and confirm the GPOs for WSUS ware gone.

    - Small Business Server Update Services Client Computers Policy
    - Small Business Server Update Services Server Computers Policy
    - Small Business Server Update Services Common Settings Policy

    7. Check and confirm the Task schedulers were removed.

    - Update Services configuration task
    - Update Services synchronization task
    - Update Services auto approval task

To reinstall the WSUS on SBS R2:

Run from the SBS R2 Technology CD 6# Cd\WSUS_20\wsussetup.exe to reinstall
    WSUS.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

If the problem still happens after we performed the above steps, please
help to gather all SBS setup log files in c:\program files\microsoft
integration\windows small business server 2003\logs\ on SBS and send to me
    at .

    Hello Gary,

Yes, as per your recommendation I reinstalled WSUS 2.0 from the R2
disk. This reinstalled the dbase which allowed me to upgrade to WSUS 3.0
SP1. I would mention that you should rerun CEICW after the
installation/upgrade is completed otherwise you'll risk seeing a lot of
errors within the Event Log due to broken integration. CEICW will resolve
    all of this...thank you.

    | | | Hello Gary,
    | | |
    | | | Thank you for your post.
    | | | My name is Gary Wang, and it is my pleasure to work with you on this
    | | issue!
    | | | Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
    | | | understand it, the issue is:
    | | |
    | | | Your WSUS failed to work after reinstall with the following error:
    | | |

    | | |
    | | |
    | | | If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.
    | | |
    | | | Suggestion :
    | | | ==============
    | | | Based on my experience, if the database was deleted, you have to
    | | reinstall
    | | | the whole WSUS. You can reinstall WSUS 2.0 on SBS server by reinstall
    | SBS
    | | | R2 component from Add or Remove Programs.
    | | |
    | | | I suggest that we follow the steps below to reinstall the WSUS on SBS
    | | 2003
    | | | R2:
    | | |
    | | | To uninstall the WSUS on SBS 2003 R2:
    | | |
    | | | 1. In Add/remove programs, select Remove to remove Windows Small
    | | business
    | | | server R2.
    | | | 2. Delete all files under the folder: C:\WSUS
    | | | 3. Delete all files the folder: C:\Program Files\Update Services
    | | | 4. Delete the WSUS related Virtual directories under the Default web
    | | site
    | | | in IIS admin.
    | | |
    | | | - UpdateServices virtual directory
    | | | - ClientWebService virtual directory
    | | | - SelfUpdate virtual directory
    | | |
    | | | 5. Confirm that IIS and other buildCin websites were still
    | functioning.
    | | | 6. Check and confirm the GPOs for WSUS ware gone.
    | | |
    | | | - Small Business Server Update Services Client Computers Policy
    | | | - Small Business Server Update Services Server Computers Policy
    | | | - Small Business Server Update Services Common Settings Policy
    | | |
    | | | 7. Check and confirm the Task schedulers were removed.
    | | |
    | | | - Update Services configuration task
    | | | - Update Services synchronization task
    | | | - Update Services auto approval task
    | | |
    | | | To reinstall the WSUS on SBS R2:
    | | |
    | | | Run from the SBS R2 Technology CD 6# Cd\WSUS_20\wsussetup.exe to
    | | reinstall
    | | | WSUS.
    | | |
    | | | Hope these steps will give you some help.
    | | |
    | | | If the problem still happens after we performed the above steps,
    please
    | | | help to gather all SBS setup log files in c:\program files\microsoft
    | | | integration\windows small business server 2003\logs\ on SBS and send

  6. Hi Gary,

Thanks for your update and share your experience to us, I am glad to know
    that your issue was resolved.

By the way, in order to sharing our experience with the other users and
help them to search/find specific answers more efficiently in the future, I
would like to make a summary here:

    Problem description:

Your WSUS failed to work after reinstall with the following error:

    Begin SyncGroups
The Server Computers group was not found: Update Services Server
    Computers.
The Client Computers group was not found: Update Services Client
    Computers.

!ERROR! Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
    -------- UpdateGPOSecurityFilter failed on servers.
!ERROR! Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

    Cause: WSUS database corrupt

Resolution: Reinstall WSUS 2.0 from R2 disc, then upgrade to WSUS 3.0. At
    last, rerun CEICW

Thanks again for your time and patience. Have a nice day :)

    |
CEICW will
    resolve
    | all of this...thank you.

    | | | | Hello Gary,
    | | | |
    | | | | Thank you for your post.
    | | | | My name is Gary Wang, and it is my pleasure to work with you on
    this
    | | | issue!
    | | | | Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
    | | | | understand it, the issue is:
    | | | |
    | | | | Your WSUS failed to work after reinstall with the following error:
    | | | |
    | | | | Begin SyncGroups
    | | | | The Server Computers group was not found: Update Services
    Server
    | | | | Computers.

    | | | |
    | | | |
    | | | | If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me
    know.
    | | | |
    | | | | Suggestion :
    | | | | ==============
    | | | | Based on my experience, if the database was deleted, you have to
    | | | reinstall
    | | | | the whole WSUS. You can reinstall WSUS 2.0 on SBS server by
    reinstall
    | | SBS
    | | | | R2 component from Add or Remove Programs.
    | | | |
    | | | | I suggest that we follow the steps below to reinstall the WSUS on
    SBS
    | | | 2003
    | | | | R2:
    | | | |
    | | | | To uninstall the WSUS on SBS 2003 R2:
    | | | |
    | | | | 1. In Add/remove programs, select Remove to remove Windows Small
    | | | business
    | | | | server R2.
    | | | | 2. Delete all files under the folder: C:\WSUS
    | | | | 3. Delete all files the folder: C:\Program Files\Update Services
    | | | | 4. Delete the WSUS related Virtual directories under the Default
    web
    | | | site
    | | | | in IIS admin.
    | | | |
    | | | | - UpdateServices virtual directory
    | | | | - ClientWebService virtual directory
    | | | | - SelfUpdate virtual directory
    | | | |
    | | | | 5. Confirm that IIS and other buildCin websites were still
    | | functioning.
    | | | | 6. Check and confirm the GPOs for WSUS ware gone.
    | | | |
    | | | | - Small Business Server Update Services Client Computers Policy
    | | | | - Small Business Server Update Services Server Computers Policy
    | | | | - Small Business Server Update Services Common Settings Policy
    | | | |
    | | | | 7. Check and confirm the Task schedulers were removed.
    | | | |
    | | | | - Update Services configuration task
    | | | | - Update Services synchronization task
    | | | | - Update Services auto approval task
    | | | |
    | | | | To reinstall the WSUS on SBS R2:
    | | | |
    | | | | Run from the SBS R2 Technology CD 6# Cd\WSUS_20\wsussetup.exe to
    | | | reinstall
    | | | | WSUS.
    | | | |
    | | | | Hope these steps will give you some help.
    | | | |
    | | | | If the problem still happens after we performed the above steps,
    | please
    | | | | help to gather all SBS setup log files in c:\program
    files\microsoft
    | | | | integration\windows small business server 2003\logs\ on SBS and
    send
    | to
    | | | me
    | | | | at .

    | | | | | I reinstalled WSUS 3.0 SP1 because a client I added was ending up
    | in
    | | | the
    | | | | | Unassigned Computers Group. Well I did a bonehead move and
    | | | inadvertantly
    | | | | | deleted the dbase when I did the uninstall. So I tried to
    recreate
    | | two
    | | | | of my
    | | | | | three original update group manually:
    | | | | |
    | | | | | Server Computers
    | | | | | Client Computers
    | | | | |
    | | | | | Initially I thought it had worked but the log below clearly
    | reflects
    | | | that
    | | | | I
    | | | | | failed. Now I know SBS 2003 is integrated with WSUS via GP but
    | I've
    | | no
    | | | | idea
    | | | | | how to fix this short of reinstalling WSUS 2.0 from the R2 disk.
    | | | Before
    | | | | I do
    | | | | | this I was wondering if anyone knew another solution, thanks.
