after stalling WMP11 I ran a search for music files, then found everything
listed twice. Read the FAQs, couldnt find how to remove duplicate listings,
so removed all the folders in library and then tried to refresh the listings
with a seaarch, but folders now are not added, so I have an empty library!!!
Anybody able to help with this please? I am sure earlier editions had a
    remove duplicate listings option.

http://www.dalepreston.com/Media/windows-media-player-faq.aspx?q=duplicatelibraryentries should explain the duplicated entries.

As for why you can't add the folders again, you probably have Windows Media
Player configured not to add previously deleted items. Press F3 two open the
Add to Library dialog and clear the check box.

Of course, since you don't have anything in your library at all now, the
best solution might be to simply rebuild your library and then add the tracks
    by following the instructions at
    http://www.dalepreston.com/Blog/2007/03/windows-media-player-metadata-backup.html#rebuilding.
