Replacing Server

Discussion in 'Server Migration' started by Dave C., Jul 14, 2008.

  1. Hello Dave C.,

As kj stated, demote the old server instead of disconnecting to remove the
DC from the AD database. If you do not do it you will have errors about replication
problems. If the old one is removed from the netwrok you can also use the
ip before promoting the new server.

    Best regards

I'm starting the server replacement. I though I'd transfer the FSMO roles
today before starting that actual move tomorrow. All of them transferred
properly as according to the document Except for the Schema role. When open
the "change Schema Master" Dialog box from the MMC console the line that
lists the current role holder shows an ERROR and I cannot change it because
the current role holder is offline. As far as I know all DCs are online and
working properly. IS there a way that I can get the system to display the
name that it thinks the name of the current Schema operations master is? I
don't want to seize the role unless I have to.

    Open a command prompt on one of the servers and type;

    netdom query fsmo

Thanks, It turned out to be assigned to a server that apparently was removed
from out network several months ago. I've seized the role and everything is
    looking good now.

You're welcome. Sounds like you have a little "cleanup" to do eventually.

The server has been replaced and is working well. Thanks to both Meinolf and
    KJ for all their help.
