Request & install 3rd-party cert on SBS2003

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by Jeff Vandervoort, Nov 14, 2006.

  1. SBS2003 SP1 server, with CEICW-generated self-signed cert installed on
Default Web Site. I want to replace that with a 3rd-party cert, but use the
self-signed cert until I have the new 3rd-party one.

Do these instructions (for IIS5, but applicable to IIS6 & the only
    instructions I found)--

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/295281

--apply to SBS2003 SP1? Or do I also or instead need to use CEICW in some
    way?

    TIA

  2. Hello Jeff,

    Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you want to install
3rd-party certificate to replace SBS server self-signed certificate for
your SSL web site. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't
    hesitate to let me know.

Please note this KB doesn't apply to SBS circumstance.

The process to use a trusted certificate through CEICW is not the most
    straightforward.

First, request a new certificate via the normal IIS process (the private
key is generated here and stored on the local machine).

    Second, submit a certificate request

Note: you can find the detail steps in the follow KB page:

How to implement SSL in IIS
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299875/en-us

Third, once the request is made and the certificate is obtained from the
vendor (it will be a .cer file at this point), then you can runs CEICW and
selects to use a trusted cert and browses to the file you received from the
    vendor.

In the Web Server Certificate step of CEICW, select Use a Web server
certificate from a trusted authority, browse and add the .cer file.

Note: this step will replace old certificate automatic.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

    Best regards,
