Running DCPromo on W2k03 server after NT4 in-place upgrade

We have upgraded our NT4 PDC to Server 03 successfully on a relatively large,
flat domain (20 plus BDC's on 20 subnets). We added the NT4Emulator key
prior to the upgrade. The next planned step is to run DCPromo on a clean
install Server 03 box and then transfer FSMO rolls to the clean install box.

It is my understanding that I will need both the NT4Emulator and the
NeutralizeNT4Emulator keys on the new DC and the originally upgraded DC. Is
this correct? Anything else we should be concerned about?

  2. Hi Mike,

Yes - that's correct - you'll need both keys on future DCs, and you'll
need the neutralize-key also on administrative workstations.

And don't worry about transfering the FSMOs as fast as possible, I'd
first install some DCs and then transfer the FSMOs directly to their
final destination. There's no issue in keeping the upgraded DC online
    for a couple days.

    Hi Ulf,

Thank you for responding. We will add both keys to our future DC's and also
add the Neutralize key to our original upgraded DC.

    Regards

  4. Hi Mike,

But don't forget that you can and should get rid of the keys when you
have enough DCs (in each site) to handle the Windows 2000 and XP logon
traffic (and when you are sure that you don't need a rollback to a NT
    Domain).
