Running seperate server for Web and SQL with SBS (ISA) server

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by Hugh G. Johnson, Aug 18, 2004.

  1. So SBS 03 has been motoring along pretty smoothly for six months. I'm
starting to do alot of production web work. I'm thinking about adding a
second server running WS 03 and SQL Server. I'm not sure if we should allow
this to be accessed from outside our office or not. The SBS is running ISA
as well, so I'm not sure how I would go about that. I'm curious to know what
other SBSers are doing with additional servers.

Also, is it my imagination, or will the copy of SQL Server I got with my
premium edtion not work on another server?

    Thanks.

  2. Hi Hugh,

You can't install SQL from the SBS CD's on another server. Have a look at
www.smallbizserver.net, About to see how Mariette is running her web site on
SBS 2003 with a W2k3 Web edition server.

  3. What's your goal? Why are you thinking of adding another server?
Not legally, no. Bear in mind that SQL on SBS is licensed for use to
back-end your own corporate website. This is a bonus for SBS, since
ordinarily you require Processor Licences for SQL Server for
    back-ending public websites.
