I use folders on the desktop to store stuff about latest idea/project.
Just a big research grab bag of stuff; images, word docs, shortcuts,
    etc.
So if I've got a bunch of tabs open relevant to the latest thought
stream, how do I save the IE session, in the folder, so that all the
    tabs can be restored?

Use Windows Explorer to drag and copy selected Favorites from the
Favorites folder to any other folder you like.

However, you may like Tab Groups better (search for it in the Help file.)
