SB16 sound deriver in DOS VPC

Discussion in 'Virtual PC' started by Craig Nicholas, May 12, 2004.

  1. Hi
I cannot get the original SB16 DOS sound drivers to work
    in VPC 2004 build 582.

At boot time the drivers report an error. When I manually
run diagnose it reports a base IO address that cannot be
    used.

The underlying hardware is SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS and
SoundMax (two cards because Audigy mic-in won't work with
my condenser mic; that's another saga).

    Any suggestions?

    Regards
    Craig

The diagnose utility has never worked under VPC. What app do you need
to install the drivers for? Generally, DOS apps have there own
    drivers.

All you should need is the SET command with the parameters listed in
    the VPC help.

  3. Hi Steve
Does this mean it is not normally necessary to install
    sound card drivers?

I presumed drivers would need to be installed as if
building a real PC. I thought the emulation was at a
    hardware level only.

DOS is different. You don't need to install DOS drivers for a sound
card, as most apps have their own sound drivers. This is the same on
a real DOS PC, you generally just need the SET command for the
    parameters.
