SBS 2003 Std Backups taking 8 hours from 4 hours

I am running SBS 2003 Standard on an HP ML350 G5 with 4 GB RAM. My backups
used to take 3-4 hours for approximately 150Gb, and were done to an external
    USB hard drive, without problems.

    Log file excerpt:
Backup started on 8/5/2009 at 12:37 AM.
Backup completed on 8/5/2009 at 3:24 AM.
    Directories: 32230
    Files: 64392
    Bytes: 64,730,198,422
Time: 2 hours, 46 minutes, and 58 seconds
Backup of "SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group"

The two EDB/STM and 3 log files total 7.41Gb - total

Since upgrading to Trend Micro WFBSA 6.0, my backups are now taking 8 hours
to complete. The logs show the most time is spent on the exchange store and I
have excluded EVERY exchange folder from Trend Micro. The store is less than
8 GB in size, but the backup logs show the store is 64.6 GB.

The exchange logs are set to wrap and I only see 3 log files at 5 Mb dated
today, so they are not running out of control.

Anybody got suggestions about what to check next, I am not going to buy a
3rd party app to backup the server, so I'm hoping to fix SBS Backup.

    Thanks

  2. Sean,

What comes after > Backup of "SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First
    Storage Group"?

    You're showing what came before.

Or, you could post the entire backup log.

  3. Have you excluded scanning the Exchsrvr folder (and/or the USB drive) on the
server? Even in the absence of a backup problem, you don't want to scan the
Exchsrvr folder. Also, turn off scanning "network files." (I think it's
called "Scan mapped drives and shared folders on the network" under
    antivirus/antisypware | Advanced settings).

SBS 2003 antivirus exclusions: (for both realtime and scheduled scans)

    Folders

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
    Server\Networking\POP3\Incoming mail
    C:\Program Files\exchsrvr

    C:\Program Files\Trend

    C:\program Files\Trend Micro

    C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv

    C:\Windows\system32\lls

    Files

    C:\pagefile.sys

    C:\windows\system32\licstr.cpa

Here is the complete log, but the other entries all looked normal and took
minutes to complete. The backup volume set is about 150GB per set and this
log shows it being much larger.....

  5. Looks like the backup log shows 7,946,281,378 for the Exchange store.
64,730,198,422 is for "G: NGH Files".

    Merv,
I checked my excluded folders and we seem to be in sync, I did add the IIS
folder and the licstr.cpa file exclusion.

Am I misreading the log entries? What starts each block?

  8. Maybe disable the server realtime scan and try the backup again tonight.

(in WFBSA 5.0 it was in Security Settings | Servers | Configure |
    Antivirus/Anti-Spyware | uncheck 'enable")

  9. Hi Sean,

IMHO, the SBS 2003 backup log has always suffered from 'bad formatting'.
    Here's the 'block" in question:

    --------------------------------------------------
Backup (via shadow copy) of "G: NGH Files"
Backup set #4 on media #1
Backup description: "SBS Backup created on 8/4/2009 at 10:00 PM"

    Wow -

I would have guessed the blank line to be a delimeter..... Ok

Well, I'll try disabling the RTS but I have no idea why everything suddenly
takes and extra 3 hours to complete. I used to be done between 3-4 AM, now
it's after 6AM..... and into my work day!

  11. Assuming nothing else has changed, except for the installation of the AV, I
can't think of anything else that would slow down the backup.

Trend Micro has spent a number of hours working with me as the
installation/upgrade left me with the TM Master service not starting
automatically, we've done a number of uninstall/re-installs and seem to be
making progress, but I logged in the other day to find the backup still
running.... cold chill..... and here I am.

    Thanks for your help.
