    Hi all,

I was updating a SBS 2008 server. I got it up to SBS 2008 SP2 and then
another 8 installs and WSUS 3.0 SP2 failed. Seems like I'm not the first.
I found the following, but need some advice.

    http://hiltont.blogspot.com/2009/08/sbs-2008-ur3-and-wsus-30-sp2-update.html
    which led to
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd443475(WS.10).aspx

The bottom of the 2nd article shows my exact issue, however in my installed
    updates I don't see WSUS 3.0 SP2 (or the article 972455-maybe somethign
else?) so I don't see anything to uninstall.

Also, the next advice in the 2nd article is to install WSUS 3.0 SP2, but
those directions don't work since WSUS does not appear to be installed
anymore (failure happened right after the update uninstalled WSUS).

    I have the following symptoms:
-Update services service does not exist.
-In Control Panel\Windows Update I get Code 80244019 Windows Update
    encountered an unknown error.

Please suggest what I should do here. I'm tempted to instsall WSUS 3.0 SP2
    from bottom link here
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...20-2695-436C-9578-3403A7D46E40&displaylang=en ,
but I don't want to get a worse issue.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  2. If it pulled it out, it may be in the exact condition to put it back.

Did you read from the top and see if you can follow those instructions?

I did not. I was worried to reinstall WSUS from scratch as described in
step 3. It says to delete any WSS subdirectory on any server volume. I
    have the following
C:\WSUS which is empty for the most part (it was emptied during the failed
    update)
    and
H:\WSUS which was created by the update as a backup.

Do I need to rename the H:\WSUS backup directory and is there any way to
    import from that backup?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  4. I would just reinstall from scratch using the instructions.

What exactly is the H: drive? Is that an external Usb drive or something?

Yes, H: is a USB drive. The WSUS 3.0 SP2 update made the backup and told me
about it. More specifically this is the message I copied when it failed.

Windows Server Update Services could not be upgraded. A database backup was
    created at H:\WSUS\{90B4BC2A-99D3-45E6-82C7-5575D7755D09}. For more
    information, see the Setup log
    "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WSUSSetup.log".

Do you think I should still proceed with following step 3 (reinstalling WSUS
from disc)? Is there a way to use the backup once that's done by importing
    or something?

    Thanks,
    Mike

I downloaded and manaully installed WSUS 3.0 SP2 and it installed fine this
time. Now I'm running a sync and getting things setup that have changed.
Some setttings have stayed the same.
