SBS 2008: Tape Backups

    Hi,

We are starting to get some interest in SBS 2008. Historically, we've
always been big advocates of tape backups using either SBS Backup or
CA Arcserve. With the removal of tape support in SBS 2008, we are left
with two options - USB/removable storage device and SBS backup, or 3rd
    party software and tape.

Given that we have always implored our SBS customer base to embrace
tapes over anything else, we plan to stick with this and offer a 3rd
    party solution.

CA Arcserve will clearly do the job but lacks a customer friendly
interface and any kind of integration into SBS itself. So I am
wondering, what are you guys planning on doing? Will you be going down
the SBS backup route or providing some 3rd party solution?

    Thanks in advance.

Hmm - I'm not really in a position to agree or disagree as I've only
ever used tapes. My concern is disks are much more fragile that tapes.
I'm not adverse to change, I just need to be convinced! So far I'm
    not...
So, what happens when the first disk fails?

Agreed on the Green Checkmark. Kind of what I mean by integration.

  3. Hi

I have a great deal of respect for the professionals who advocate tape,
especially the responders to this thread! I personally gave up on tape years
ago and switched to Hard Disk Backup because of the nature of my client base.

One of the factors to consider in this debate is support. Tape is no longer
supported by MS on any Server 2008 product including SBS 2008 and if you have
ANY difficulty with backup OR RESTORE you are totally in an unsupported by MS
position on your server and reliant on your third party vendor for support
until the server is restored to operating condition..

I don't want my clients to be in an unsupported position!

  4. Hi Nordberg:

I read through the rest of the posts in this thread and wanted to add that
there is nothing to prevent you from doing a combination of backups. You
could run the SBS disk based backup and a third party tape backup.

Because of the nature of the SBS 2008 to Disk backup, a former option of
creating the backup and then writing that to tape would not really be viable
    in SBS 2008.
