SBS'03, WSSv3, & forms authentication licensing

  1. WSSv3 let's me use forms authentication within site collections now. Does
the SBS'03 license allow us to use this forms auth method to add a password
to some external sharepoint sites? Or does forms security count as

The purpose here is to just put a simple password on some sharepoint sites
that are available on the internet so it's not fully open everyone. These
aren't AD users, just external volunteers that pitch in and need a place to
get the calendar, etc. This is a non-profit client w/ very limited resources
so I'd hate for them to have to purchase a whole new physical server for
something with hardly any load on it.

I've been told there isn't an external connector license for SBS.

You'll better call Microsoft Licensing for this, just to make sure, but I
believe you won't have any 'licensing' issues with this, since WSS 3.0 is a
free add-on to Windows Server 2003 and as such you can use it in any way you

The problems are security based though. It isn't recommended to publish an
Internet site on an SBS server and the moment you open up SharePoint to the
world, it is consider 'web site publishing'. By all means it can be done,
    but it isn't recommended.

  3. Thanks, I called MS licensing and they confirmed this method is valid under
    the SBS license.
