SBS2003 Backup - DLT VS80

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by TimeTraveller, Nov 2, 2005.

  1. Hi All,

Have an old Compaq ML350 G2

    Benchmark DLT VS80 Tape drive.

Windows backup will not id any tape in the drive at all so backups fail etc.

Have tried Veritas Backup Exec V10d on same server and tape drive works fine
and registers tapes and backups are fine also.

Have updated the drivers no change.

Any thoughts? trying to save the customer the cost of Veritas.

    Hi TT,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

From your problem description, I understand this issue to be: you could not
successfully backup your SBS server with SBS backup wizard or NTbackup
    utility.

From the backup log, obviously, this issue is caused by that following
    procedure call cannot be fulfilled.

    GetTapeMediaPoolName failed. (0x80070458)
    GetBackupDestination failed. (0x80070458)
    LaunchNTBackup failed. (0x80070458)

Translated from error code library, 0x80070458 is for
ERROR_NO_MEDIA_IN_DRIVE which means there is no media in drive. From this
error, we can know there could be two possible cause of this issue.

    1. There is actually no tape in the tape device and it is not correctly
    mounted.
    2. The tape device is not Listed as Compatible Device with Windows Server
2003 system. There is compatibility issue that the device cannot be
correctly recognized by the system. Please check if the backup device is in
    the HCL list:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/default.aspx?subID=22&xslt=h
    ardwarehome

I have checked your tape drive on the HCL list and I can not find the drive
is compatible with SBS 2003. So the problem should be caused by
    incompatibility.

To make sure the root cause, you can also run backup wizard to backup to
local hardware or a compatible tape to see if the problem occurs.

The following KB artilces are for your reference:

I don't know if it's specifically relevant in your case, but sometimes tape
drives have an emulation mode, configurable by DIP switches, that allows
them to pretend to be an earlier or different model that may be compatible
    with 2003. Check your documentation.

  5. In
If Veritas is working, it's using its own drivers for the drive. Uninstall
them, go to the drive mfr's website, get a) the latest drivers and b) the
tape utility they likely have, and try from there. NTBackup won't work til
RSM can correctly see the tape drive.

  6. RSM sees the tape drive correctly as does device manager.

I have installed latest drivers etc. from the manufacturers website.

NTBACKUP nothing - Veritas works fine. with and without the veritas drivers

NTBackup sees no tape drive at all?
    Device manager sees?
Can you manage media with RSM?

  8. NTBACKUP has DLT as a backup location listed.
    Device Manager OK
RSM - Will check but it is showing as a library there ok

Veritas no problem at all, with either the Windows and RSM driving things or
using its native drivers in which case it disables the library in RSM

    Hi TT,

    Thanks for your reply.

Technically speaking, if the tape drives are not fully compatible with
Windows 2K/2K3, NTBackup may not be able to support Autoloader drive and
you will need to use some 3rd party software such as Backup Exec if the
tape manufacturer does not plan to make an upgraded driver for their
    devices.

All removable-media devices are handled by Removable Storage Manager (RSM).
Unless the tape device or other removable-media device is recognized by
RSM, Windows 2K/2K3 programs (such as NTBackup and Remote Storage Server)
    cannot use the device properly.

For RSM to recognize a removable-media device, the device driver for that
device must use the Windows 2K/2K3 driver extensions. Because the device is
not on HCL for Windows 2000/2K3, please contact the device's manufacturer
for updated drivers that include the required Windows 2K/2K3 extensions to
work properly with Removable Storage Manager.

The reason why that some third-party backup solutions can use the
Autoloader feature provided by the tape drive (which is not compatible with
Windows) is that they install their own drivers for the tape library which
may not be RSM-aware. The third-party backup solution will function without
RSM, but the tape drive may still not function completely due to the
    incompatible driver.

    further assistance.
