Same thing here - failed update. Obviously something Microsoft needs to fix.

Not only failed 3 times also caused a critical error on restart, I needed to
go back to last known good configuration.

Anybody else having a problem on restart?

  16. Hm, has this update been offered to your (and your reincarnations) system
via Windows/Auto Update? Or did you download the update manually and are
    trying to install it now?

KB899589 (MS05-046) dates back on October 2005(!). It has been replaced
    by KB923980 (MS06-066) in November 2006(!).

The last 15 lines copy&pasted out of the KB899589.log file located in the
Windows folder may be helpful to identify the installation problem.

    Bye,
    Freudi

It was offered up by "Microsoft Update" today, not manually downloaded.

I noticed when I Googled the KB all the hits were era 2005

  18. 0x8007F06B STATUS_SP_VERSION_GREATER
Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer
than the update you are applying.

Translation: There is no need to install this update.

    QED: Why was it offered?

Did you install WinXP SP3 via Windows Update (or Automatic Updates) or did
    you install it manually?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these appplications running when you installed SP3?

    ==============================

This might be a bug in Windows Update detection logic, considering how many
"Me, too!" replies we're seeing here.

NB Lurkers: I will only reply to the vtgrandpa in this thread. If you need
more assistance, please begin a new thread of your own.

  19. I too am having the same problem, and this is not the first time this kind of
thing has happened. This refuses to download and install with error
    0x8007F06B ...

Now I cannot seem to find any information about this. So Microsoft, wake up
    and lets hear from you.

  20. This update has been offered to me via microsoft updates, I did not try to
manually install this or download it to update the computer. When I go to
auto updates, it offers it and says we have to have it. Why?
