If you type in the error number, you will find a post that helped me.

    I went to:

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx?productid=121&servicepackid=158

The Microsoft Security Bulletin and it downloaded and installed on my XP.
Heard from the other posts that it's a bug at the Update Home Page.

You won't have a problem there. The only thing I've noticed is that the
Update page said I don't need any udates, as they are all there. But... it's
still listed as "failed". As I had tried three times. Don't know why they
    can't list it as installed.

    Click on link below
Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446)
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...74-C37B-472B-BB10-71D4680680A7&displaylang=en

Download it manually, save it to your hard drive then run it and it should
    install.
To check that it installed go into the control panel, select add/remove
programs, tick the box at the top that says 'show updates' and scroll down.
It should be listed which means it is installed.
It won't appear in the microsft update history as that only registers
automatic downloads and installations and you will be doing it manually.

Same problem here. I wonder if having IE 7.0 beta2 installed might be making
the difference. That's pretty much the only thing that has changed on my
    system.

I have tried 7 times to install this patch with the same results and error
code. We apparently aren't alone with this patch.

You can add me to the list of 7 who cannot install this update, and whom
received the same error code. I tried manually and the auto tried 3 times
    today with no success.

I was having the same problem and I downloaded this update manually and it is
installed. But, as has been said before - it still appears as a failed
    install. Thanks.
