Thanks, yes your temporary fix works but I have 5 other Pc's to load yet
and I would prefere a quality fix which shows what has been installed via
your automatic service. Users need to know this is a major fix and that they
    back up first.

Windows Update logs what it does, it failed on Windows
Update so it is logged. Do not sweat it.

    |I was having the same problem and I downloaded this update
    manually and it is
    | installed. But, as has been said before - it still
    appears as a failed
    | install. Thanks.

I am 0-for-3 on systems with Symantec anti-virus, and 3 for 3 on systems with
    McAfee. Anyone else seeing this?

  6. My failure via Automatic UPdates was on a system with McAfee -
but I tried with all services shut down too.

I'll see what happens at home tonight. Those are all running
    OneCare or AVG.

  7. It's a MS problem, as was addressed in this newsgroup earlier. They are
working on correcting it. In the meantime, you can download the update via
    the technet download.

  8. On one system I have ZoneAlarm/McAfee, on another I have AVG, and
another I Avast! Professional. I also use three different firewalls
(ZoneAlarm, nVidia NAM, and Sygate). Installation gacked on all
machines, Windows Update page refers to error 0x80242006 I am going to
    try installing manually.

  9. I'm new at this, but I'm having the same problem. What happens next? It
looks like a MSN proplem so do we wait and try it later?

    Hi Marc
I did all what you said (including the rename of the file mentioned in your
article), however, when I try to install this update appears the following
message: "the installation program cannot confirm the integrity of the file
Update.inf. Be sure that encrypted service is being executed in this system".
I'm tanslating the message from spanish. So, I can't install the update
    manually.
Also, when I try to install the update automatically, it finish
unsuccesfull and appears the message: "wuauclt.exe has detected a problem and
    it must be closed".
    What can I do?.
    Thanks.

  11. Hi,

See if running the batch file fixdb.bat that I have created helps:

    http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database". Download and run it.
