i just imported a users mail into outlook 2003 -- when it was done he
hit send/recieve and it has been stuck on 50% for about an hour
now...is this normal? he has quite a few e-mails (.pst file is almost
a gig) -- is the exchange server just synchronizing them for the first
time? Is it ok for him to shut down?

  2. If this is Outlook 2003 in Cached Exchange Mode (the default), when you
import the items they go to the server mailbox. Then Outlook syncs them to
the cache on the local machine. That can take quite a while the first time.
If you stop it, next time you start Outlook it'll pick up where it left off
    with no harm done.

You might advise the user to lock the computer rather than shut down, and
let it finish, so you don't have to wait for it next time.

Outlook will sync the mailbox periodically when the user starts it and at
other times, but it'll be a background operation and happen relatively
    quickly.
