Server Monitoring and Reporting: Reports failing to be emailed

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by Christopher Erckert, Oct 4, 2005.

  1. SBS 2003 Standard SP1

Ok, I had a problem with My SBS Reporting and Monitoring a while back but I
was able fix it thanks to the great help on this forum to got it back up and
    runnning.

However there is still one problem that I am having. After going throught
the Monitoring Configuration wizard, and proceding through the more
comprehensize reinstall option. I can view the reports fine on the server, I
even receive an email letting me know that the monitoring and reporting
fuction is setup and that I will recieve critcal alert emails in the future.

However I dont recieve the actual Server performance report. I tried
sending a test version but every time I do that I get an error message that
states "an error occured while sending the server status report. verify that
report configuration setting are correct, and then try again."

Any help would be great. The client wants his reports.. you know how it is.

  2. Hi Christopher,

    Welcome to SBS newsgroup.

    Issue description:
    ===============

I understand that you want to receive server performance reports via
emails. But every time you send the reports, you will get the error, "an
error occurred while sending the server status report".

    Analyzing and suggestions:
    ================

In order to narrow down the problem, please help to gather the following
    information:

    1. Try sending the Report manually with these steps: Open Server
Management, go to Monitoring and Reporting, click "Change Server Status
Report Settings" and then click Send Now. Will you get the e-mail
immediately? If not, check the Queues in Exchange System Manager (Servers
-> Server name-> Queues) and see if the message is stuck in the queue for
some reason. That may tell us whether the problem is with the e-mail
configuration or with the status reports piece.
    2. Please also try the command line on SBS 2003, to see if the reports can
be sent or not, you can check it on the email box that you mentioned in the
MCW wizard. (Please use a internal email address for testing)

    %sbsprogramdir%\monitoring\mssbsssr.exe -C:Server Performance Report

    3. What's the e-mail domain of the report recipient address? Does the SBS
server send e-mails through a smart host server? If so, could you please
let me know which ISP is the smart host provider?

    4. Use the message tracking utility to see if the report e-mails were
    actually sent.

Open Exchange System Manager Console, navigate to Servers\Server Name.
Right-click it and choose ''Properties''. If the ''Enable message
tracking'' option is enabled, you may track the previous e-mail delivering
history. If the option is not enabled, please check the option box, waiting
for the problem be reproduced and then track the message history.

To track the e-mails, please navigate to the ''Message tracking center'' in
''Exchange System Manager''\''Tools''\. Input the recipient e-mail address,
set the time range and click ''Find Now'' button. Can you find the previous
report e-mails? If so, please open the entry of the missed e-mails. What's
    the detailed information?

821910 How to troubleshoot for Exchange Server 2003 transport issues
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=821910

Sometimes, if you are using the smart host to deliver the e-mails, your ISP
(for example: bellsouth.net) will not forward email unless it says
@bellsouth.net. If that's the case, what you will need to do is to change
the administrator's SMTP address to .

Although you can change the ''E-mail address for replies only'' option in
Properties of ''Server Status Report'' -> ''E-mail Options'' tab, the
System will still use the Primary E-mail address for the Administrator
account to send the server status email. For example, if you set
in ''Server Status Report'' -> ''E-mail Options'',
but is the Primary E-mail address for the
Administrator account (which is set in ADUC), the System will still use
    to send the status report.

So if we want to change the server status report sender address, we need to
change the Primary E-mail Address for Administrator in ADUC:
    1. Run dsa.msc to bring up ADUC.
    2. Locate the Administrator account in ''Users'' OU, and then double click
    to bring up ''Properties''.
    3. Switch to the E-mail Addresses, ''New'' the desired SMTP address, and
    then ''Set As Primary''.
    4. Next time, the System will use this new Primary SMTP address to send the
    server status report.

Note: The option ''Automatically update e-mail addresses based on recipient
policy'' should be UNCHECKED. By default, this option for the Administrator
    account is unchecked.

I appreciate you taking time to gather the information. If you have any
questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know. I look forward to
    your reply!

  3. Charles,

Things are still not working but I'll try to go in order of your list to
    explain what i have tried.

    1. I've tried this many times. No messages are stuck in queues

    2. I i could not get this comand line to run.

    3. the email domain is evonetworks.com (remeber that i still am able to
recieve other email notifications from the server ( Confirming Alert
Configuration - "server name", and Confirming Server Performance Report
Configuration - servername") which are both sent from
    [email protected]"servername".local

    4. I used the message tracking utility and the only messages that were
tracked were the Confirming Alert Configuration - "server name", and
Confirming Server Performance Report Configuration - servername", which I
successfully recieved. The actual server performance reports have no records
    in the message tracking utility.

Should I just reinstall the monitoring and reporting? What should I do next?

  4. HI Christopher,

    Thanks for updates.

From your description, it seems there is no problem existing on your
Exchange system. The Server Performance report is not sent from Monitoring.
So we might have reinstall Monitoring components on SBS 2003 via SBS
integrate Setup, as the Monitoring component seem corrupt please refer to
    my suggestion below:

    1. Open Add/Remove in Control Panel.
    2. Click Windows Small Business Server 2003 from the list.
    3. Then choose maintains for SBS Server tools
    4. Then choose reinstall monitoring components.

I appreciate your understanding on this issue; please feel free to let me
know if you have any further concerns on this issue. I am glad to be of
    further assistance.
