Is this pc running Win XP? 1) Windows Update "process" will create a restore point prior to applying updates.
    2) You can "create" your own checkpoint using System Restore.
Start menu >Accessories>System Tools>System Restore > CREATE a restore point option.

Be aware system restore does NOT cover your documents or files from your "usual" user programs.

    3) This group is focused on Windows Update issues. For general issue in XP, you'd learn a whole bunch more using one of those groups.
