    SBS2003 Standard Edition

After applying the KB829538 patch as reccomended by Windows Update my
    companyweb site has been broken.

    The MSSQL$SHAREPOINT Instance starts.

I have unistalled and reinstalled the intranet component using the
server maintenance option and re-run CEICW.

The default site , OWA , TSWEB and RWW run, but from the server
    console http://companyweb I get:

    HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden

    On a client I get:

Cannot connect to the configuration database.

In the event log every five seconds I get:

    Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1000
    Date: 15/05/2004
    Time: 13:50:07
    User: N/A
    Computer: SERVER2003
    Description:
#50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on
SERVER2003\SharePoint. Check the database connection information and
make sure that the database server is running.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The SQL Server Service Manager reports that SERVER\SHAREPOINT is
running for both SQL Server and Distributed Transaction Coordinator.

I have seen that other folks have had the same problem when applying
this patch and I am surprised that no one from Redland has given us a
    solution.

Anyone had any sucess in fixing this issue.

    Thanks.

    Kev.

  3. Just in case, verify "Temporary ASP.NET Files" folder have full control for
    Local Service and Network Service.

Local Service and Network Service account: Read & Excute, List Folder
    Contents, and Read permissions to
    %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322.

Local Service and Network Service account: Full Control permission to
    %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files.

    Hi Susan,

Checked the permissions as as you suggested and they were identical to
    your post.

Now http://companyweb form a XP client returns:

If you believe you should be able to view this directory or page,
please try to contact the Web site by using any e-mail address or
phone number that may be listed on the companyweb home page.

You can click Search to look for information on the Internet.

    HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden
    Internet Explorer

    Web server permissions maybe?

It is somewhat frustrating, but thanks for your help anyway.

    Susan,

Yes I did use the old cdrom3 and I have since installed the patch
    without any change in behaviour.

I can see the 50070 errors in the event log are the result of the
Sharepoint Timer Service not mounting the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT properly,
as when I stop the srvice the errors stop being logged. However,
restarting the service does not reslove the problem.

I am wondering if the fact that I have Veritas Backup Exec 9.1
installed is causing an issue with the KB829358, although that hot fix
is not listed in add/remove programs in control panel. Before that hot
fix was installed I had a perfect SBS 2003 Standard box. As it is not
listed in control panel it seems I am unable to remove it either.

This SBS 2003 box is a DR backup for a production machine running
Veritas Backup Exec 9.1. I use it to be able to read any DLT tapes
done on the production machine, the project is to test SBS 2003
Standard with a view to performing a fresh install on the production
    machine in due course.

I know that Veritas offer a version of Backup Exec for SBS 2003 and if
the pilot is successful we will be installing that or perhaps using an
imaging product such as that authored by Acronis.

Any more thoughts would be gratefully received.

    Many thanks.

    Susan,

One other thing I have noticed is that on the Virtual Server List of
the Sharepoint Central Administration web page, I have the following
    listed:

    Name URL Version

    companyweb http://companyweb Not Installed Extend

    Default Web Site http://server2003/ 5.0.2.5012
    Upgrade

    M'Soft Sharepoint Admin http://server2003:4888/ 5.0.2.5012 Not
    Administrable

I have also tried to run the following:

    stsadm.exe -o upgrade -url http://companyweb

    from C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server
    extensions\60\bin

    the result is:

Cannot open database requested in 'STS_config'. Login fails. <Error
    code: 4060>.

I noted that the KB829358 made a backup directory of the Data
directory in MSSQL$SHAREPOINT so I copied back all the STS_* files to
the new data directory. This did not help.

I have also changed the account contect for MSSQL$SHAREPOINT from
local sytem to the Administrator accout with the same result, after
    stopping and restarting the service.

The hair is piling up on the floor!

    Thanks.

Is anyone else experiencing the same problems as me, in relation to
KB829358 install and the companyweb site broken as a result?

This is really very very frustrating.

    Thanks for any advice.
