Simple FTP Setup - what's not right

    Diane Guest

I have Windows 2003 Server network environment. Server #1 has DNS Server #2
has website www.domainname.com setup in IIS. I want to add an ftp site that
    is ftp.domainname.com.

On Server #2 (the webserver) I see that there is a default ftp that pints to
the IP for Server #2 and a local path as it's home.

On Server #1 (the DNS Server) I created in Server #1, Forward Looking Zones
and IP address of Server #2.

When I try to use IE and goto ftp.domainserver.com I receive the following
    error message:

"Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the filename
correctly and that you have permission to access this folder.

    Details:
The server name or address could not be resolved"

Did I miss a step? Do I need to reboot the server(s)? Any help would be
    greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Diane

  2. Did you run did you try ipconfig /flushdns to clear the DNS Client cache
    first and run
nslookup ftp.domainserver.com to see if it resolved to an IP address?

I did the ipconfig / flushDNS and the nslookup ftp.domianserver.com (which in
    my case should be 192.168.200.230)

    I received the following response:

Can't find server for address 192.168.200.215: Non-existant domain
    Server: Unknown
    Address: 192.168.200.215

    Name: ftp.domainserver.com
    Address: 192.168.200.230

    Can you translate this?

    Also to note:

When onsite using ie browser, I can access both the www.domainserver.com and
    ftp.domainserver.com.

From the outside, i can see the website, but get that error when trying to
    get to the ftp.

  5. This is nslookup performing a reverse lookup on the DNS server's IP and
there is no PTR record found.
    It is resolving here.

  6. That is likely because the ftp record does not exist or has the wrong IP on
the public DNS server, which should have nothing to do with your internal
    DNS server.

Is there something else I can check? It seems the process is pretty
straighforward. Is there some security perhaps? I basically copied the
settings that existed on www DNS setup.

  8. In another post in this thread you said it works internally, but not from
the internet. That means the ftp record does not exist on the internet DNS
or it resolves to the wrong IP.

Without the actual domain name I have no way of checking which is the
    problem.

You have to forgive me - I am a developer learning servers (I am the sole IT
person here). I do not uderstand what this means.

"That means the ftp record does not exist on the internet DNS or it resolves
    to the wrong IP."

What do you mean internet DNS? (Was that a stupid question) I'd be happy to
tell you the address, but not on this forum.

    provider?

Since I can see it internall & not externally, could it be a port/firewall
    issue?

  12. The internet DNS is the DNS that is authoritative for the domain name on the
internet. Internally, on your network, it is your DNS server, but outside
your network it is the DNS listed on the public record for the domain name.

  13. If your service provider is the authoritative DNS provider on the Public
    record, yes.

  14. It could, FTP uses port 21, HTTP uses port 80. but the name still must
resolve to the correct IP address.

Ahhhhhhh - that was it. All the technical stuff in house was done - needed
to have the outside vendor create a DNS record for me as well. Thank you for
pointing me in the right direction!! I really appreciate it.
