Automatic updates installed Software Distribution Service 2.0 on June
16, then again on June 22. Ever since, my machine takes a long time to
boot, and Outlook and Word both freeze. The default XP boot music does
not play for at least 5 minutes, and nothing works correctly until
then. I first noticed the change when the taskbar changed from the XP
Luna default theme to Windows Classic, with no selection to set it back
    to XP default.

I did a repair install and all is right. Of course, this set everything
back to the initial install in November 2004, when I installed my
retail version of XP Home SP2 on a new hard drive. From now on, I will
not allow automatic updates, since this is the second time they have
cost me valuable time doing troubleshooting, rather than work. The
first time was an automatic update that made my Epson scanner
nonfunctional. I finally found a fix for that one at Epson's site.

No more automatic updates for me. I have plenty of anti-virus and
anti-spyware protection that I run regularly, plus a good third-party
software firewall. Next week, I'll have a hardware firewall. Also, I
never open any email attachments. I think I'm good without the
    automatic updates.
