Some clients not picking up the updates.

I have a server 2003 domain with 600 XP Pro workstations. I have these
workstations in 30 separate room OU's. The GPO is set on the domain policy
for the updates. The problem i am having is that certain computers are not
being picked up. i.e; I have a OU called Office and inside this OU is 20
computers, 3 or 4 of these computers are displaying in WSUS but not the
others. I know the machines are being used all day everyday but they do not
seem to be showing in WSUS.

I am aware of the problem of Ghost Image machines and the SID problem but
all my machines in the domain are imaged using RIS. (Surely as this uses
risprep there is not a SID issue) Also if this was a issue, how come in
other OU's I have a all the computers are picked up. If it was a network
issue then surely i would not get any clients in a OU showing but i get a
    few.

    Any ideas?

By the way i updated from SUS ...........!

    Hi

Have a look at my "How-to" a few days ago here in this forum.

"How to: If you don't see all clients in WSUS-admin"

    So am i correct in thinking.........copy wuaueng.dll from a XP Pro SP2
client that is connecting to WSUS then paste it in the %systemroot%\system32
directory. Reboot the workstation and check if it updates the files..?

Should i give it chance to pick up the new client in WSUS before i manually
    run wuauclt.exe /detectnow ?

No, not copy from XP SP2!

From the WSUS-server copy it to the client you don't see in WSUS-admin!. The
    WSUS holds the newest one!

So it is ok to copy the server copy of the .dll file and overwrite the one
    on the XP Pro client?

I did your 'how to fix' but it turned out that the XP pro clients that do not
show up on WSUS server already have the latest wuauclt.exe file installed.
When i check the pc manually for windows updates history it tells me it is
fully updated. I check the auto updated feature and it is greyed out showing
the time i set from group policy, so i know it is picking the GPO settings up.

    Any other suggestions?

Hm, perhaps you should try the set the update frequenzy to one hour and have
a look, if the clients get in by themself.

    Have you checked the reg-settings?

  10. Can you please post or send me the %WINDIR%\windowsupdate.log from one of
your non-working clients? I can take a look and see if the client is
successfully talking to the WSUS server.

Here is the log from the last 2 days, it has been rinning for 13 days now. I
had a quick look and it looks to me as if it is updating, but it does not
show in WSUS console. All my machines are prepared by RIS imaging.

  12. Here's what I notice...
    - No updates detected
    - Scheduled installation has no updates to install
    - A restart is still pending...
    - The computer is reporting, and should be appearing in the Unassigned
    Computers group
    - Apparently the WUA thought it was going to shutdown
    - But apparently it did not...
    - Until 6pm that evening.
    - And it restarted the next morning, ran a detection, and did not find
    any updates to download.

It looks to me like it's working perfectly.

Do you have other systems that are not appearing on the console? If so,
check their logs, or the SusClientId value at
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate and see if it
matches this ID from this system:

    clientId = 614f2411-3621-4999-a2fc-876c95d7c896

If so, your problem is likely duplicated SusClientId values from your RIS
    image.

Ok, but if this was the case........lets say i have 20 computers in one room
that al use the same image. Why do i get one or two show up and not the
    others?

If it as a SUSClientID cary over surtely one would show in the WSUS console
    and i get 2 or 4 form 20..??

As well, in one room today i manually visited 3 pc's, deleted the Rgeistry
entries from the ley mentioned below, then run wauclt.exe /resetauthorization
/detectnow and they still do not show up/?????????

  14. Because WSUS tracks computers by GUID, not by name. If all 20 computers have
the same GUID (which they would have if the image had a GUID before it was
cloned), then as each computer reports to the WSUS Server, it thinks it's
the same computer, but with a different name, because the GUID is identical.
Well, that may not be all of the cause. First you must determine if the
client is properly communicating with the server, whether it's selfupdated
to the latest WUA client, and whether it has completed a detection cycle
after the selfupdate. At that point the system should be present in the WSUS
Console, but may not be if the aforementioned issue with GUIDs is
    complicating things.
